Ask most financial experts why people do not save, and they will tell you it is a discipline problem. People lack willpower. They spend too much on things they do not need. If they just made better choices, they would be fine.

We disagree. And we think the way you frame this problem determines whether you will ever solve it for yourself or for anyone you are trying to help.

The discipline myth

Discipline is not the problem. The evidence is everywhere. The same person who cannot maintain a savings habit will wake up at 5am for church every Sunday without fail. They will show up for every family obligation, maintain a demanding work schedule, and keep social commitments across months and years. Their discipline is fine. What is missing is not willpower, it is a system that makes saving the path of least resistance.

The key insight from behavioural economics: humans do not fail at long-term goals because they are lazy. They fail because the long-term goal is competing with an immediate, visible reward. The solution is not more willpower — it is a better environment.

The three real reasons people do not save

  1. The goal is too abstract. 'Build an emergency fund' is a concept. 'Add GHS 200 to Phundit today' is an action. Most savings advice gives people goals without giving them actions, and goals without actions produce anxiety, not progress.

  2. The feedback loop is broken. If you put GHS 200 in a savings account and nothing happens; no acknowledgement, no celebration, no visible progress, your brain registers it as a loss. You gave up money and got nothing in return. Dopamine drives behaviour. Good financial design gives you positive feedback immediately.

  3. The environment makes spending easier than saving. MoMo is fast, convenient, and everywhere. Savings accounts require effort to access or contribute to. Human beings choose the path of least resistance almost every time. The answer is not to fight this. it is to design a savings environment that is as frictionless as spending.

What Phundit was built to fix

Phundit's design is a direct response to each of these problems. Abstract goals become concrete targets with visible progress bars. The broken feedback loop is repaired by Zoe; who celebrates every deposit immediately and specifically. The friction problem is addressed by making deposits as easy as a MoMo transfer, while adding meaningful friction to withdrawals through the Emergency Lock.

We are not trying to make you more disciplined. We are trying to build an environment where the right financial behaviour is also the natural one. That is a different and we believe more honest way of approaching the problem.

What this means for you

If you have tried to save before and it did not work, please stop blaming yourself. The product failed you, not the other way around. A savings tool that requires you to be superhuman is a badly designed savings tool.

You deserve a tool that works with your psychology instead of against it. That is what Phundit was built to be.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

The lack of savings is not primarily a discipline problem — it is a design problem.

Abstract goals, broken feedback loops, and frictionless spending are the real barriers.

Phundit fixes all three: concrete targets, immediate celebration via Zoe, and friction on withdrawals via the Emergency Lock.

You deserve a tool that works with your psychology, not against it.
